Mainstream shoppers continue to snap up clunky 15-inch laptops that are closer in size and feel to the old-school desktops they\u2019re replacing. This ongoing trend does not bode well for real mobility geeks and for Intel, which hopes to revolutionize the market with <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.aussiebattery.com\/macbook-air-succeeds-as-apple-post-pc-pc\/\">Ultrabooks<\/a>, a new class of super-slim, long-lasting notebooks.<\/p>\n<p>In a world where tablets such as the <a title=\"How to Sync iPad To a New Computer \u2013 iPad Usage Tips by batteries-company.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/battery-care\/how-to-sync-ipad-to-a-new-computer-ipad-usage-tips-by-batteries-company-com.htm\">iPad<\/a> have sapped enthusiasm and sales from the notebook category, Intel\u2019s Ultrabook initiative promises to revive the portable PC. Unfortunately, mainstream consumers will prove difficult to convince.<\/p>\n<p>According to DisplaySearch\u2019s Q1 2011 report on screen-size market share, 11- to 13-inch notebooks make up just 11.5 percent of the North American notebook market and 10.8 percent of the market worldwide, as compared to 45.2 and 54.2 percent shares for 14- to 15-inch notebooks. According to DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, more than two thirds of those 11- and 13-inch laptops are <a title=\"Apple laptop batteries\" href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a> MacBooks. Is Intel selling mini Coopers to a market of full of SUV drivers?<\/p>\n<h4>The Puzzling Popularity of 15-Inch Notebooks<\/h4>\n<p>I kvetched in this space last September about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/battery-care\/15-inch-laptops-are-still-popular.htm\">consumers buying 15-inch notebooks<\/a>, and it looks like things haven\u2019t changed at all since that time. The 10-inch category includes traditional netbooks, but also 10-inch tablets such as the Motorola Xoom, which were just emerging at the end of Q1. If we could deduct all the tablets from these numbers and pull out all the 13-inch MacBooks, the 15-inch category would loom even larger for PC vendors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The impression is that it\u2019s a kind of desktop replacement yet still fairly portable,\u201d Shim said of 15-inch notebooks. He theorized that 13-inch notebooks have traditionally been viewed as premium products and that low-cost ultraportables with low-voltage CPUs haven\u2019t appealed to consumers because they just aren\u2019t that interested in long battery life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the CULV notebooks (Intel\u2019s low-voltage platform) came out, they <a title=\"How To Increase Your Laptop Battery Lifetime\" href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/battery-care\/how-to-increase-your-laptop-battery-lifetime.htm\">promoted laptop battery life<\/a> to consumers. They said, \u2018Oh, you can get 8 hours and it\u2019s great,\u2019\u201d Shim recalled. \u201cBut consumers were like, \u2018I don\u2019t need 8 hours\u2019 and the CULV notebooks never really took off because they were emphasizing something that consumers didn\u2019t need. Consumers are like, \u2018This notebook isn\u2019t really going to leave my house that much so I\u2019m always going to be within range of an outlet.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Shim is right about why CULV systems failed, consumers\u2019 lack of interest in long <a title=\"extend laptop battery life tips\" href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/20-ways-to-extend-laptop-battery-life.html\">battery life<\/a> and light weight could pose problems for Ultrabook adoption. \u00a0However, Intel remains bullish on the category, saying that though initial entries such as the <a title=\"Asus laptop battery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/asus\/\">Asus<\/a> UX121 are in the 11- to 13-inch size, we\u2019ll eventually see 14- and 15-inch Ultrabooks too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven within larger screen sizes there is a bias toward thinner, more responsive systems,\u201d said Greg Welch, \u00a0director of the On-the-Go Market Segment for Intel\u2019s Mobile Client Platforms Group, told us. \u201cWe don\u2019t see the popularity of 14-15 inch systems as an impediment to the adoption of Ultrabooks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Welch also said that he believes we\u2019ll see consumers gravitate toward smaller systems as they grow more accustomed to <a title=\"Top 10 mobile phones to look forward to now\" href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/battery-care\/top-10-mobile-phones-to-look-forward-to-now.htm\">smartphones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his skepticism about consumers\u2019 desire for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.batteries-company.com\/laptop-battery-life-saving-tips-and-buying-guide.htm\">longer battery life<\/a>, Shim posited that Ultrabooks\u2019 other benefits could lead to more 13-inch notebook sales if consumers can adjust to prices that are likely higher than the current $616 average laptop selling price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019ll help the market,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the overall mobile PC landscape is going to become more fragmented and at the end of the day that will lead to a bigger pie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To really establish Ultrabooks as a viable platform, Intel will need to do more than just tout their svelte looks or fast resume-from-sleep times. The company will need to show Bob and Betty <a title=\"Laptop Battery Online Shop\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebattery.com\/\">aussiebattery<\/a> that portability matters to them.
