\n<\/a>There is nothing more frustrating than a cell phone battery<\/a> that is dying, or dead.<\/p>\n

But, new battery technology<\/a> will enhance battery performance<\/a> giving it extra life.
\nIn fact, it might extend the battery by 54% of its use.<\/p>\n

The smartphone<\/a> and certain WiFi mobile gadgets have the capacity to use a “subconscious mode.” This saves the life of the HP 364602-001 battery<\/a>. It all comes down to power management.<\/p>\n

Research being done at the University of Michigan is developing that management.<\/p>\n

The idea is to make the idle time, or non-use time, of the device use less energy.<\/p>\n

The concept is called E-Mili, which stands for Energy-Minimizing Idle Listening.<\/p>\n

University of Michigan computer science and engineering professor Kang Shin says the phone mays not actively be sending or receiving, “but it’s listening to see if data is coming in so I can receive it right away. This idle listening often consumes as much power as actively sending and receiving messages all day.”<\/p>\n

Devices normally burn too much battery power<\/a> just waiting for incoming data. Basically, the procedure that Shin and Zhang have come up with operates the WiFi card at only 1\/16th of the regular operating mode. But, if the phone senses an incoming message, it wakes up and can work in full mode immediately.<\/p>\n

Recognizing an incoming message was the challenge.<\/p>\n

But, a plan was hatched. Shin says, “Usually, messages come with a header, and we thought the phone could be enabled to detect this, as you can recognize that someone is calling your name even if you’re 90 percent asleep.”<\/p>\n

Using the E-MiLi, power used is reduced by approximately 44% for about 92% of all of the wireless network devices.
\nShin and his co-researcher Xinyu Zhang will tell attendees at the ACM International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking in Las Vegas next week of their work.<\/p>\n
